MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: CAN PARENTS SELECT THEIR OWN CAREGIVER/TEACHER?

A: Yes. It will be the parents’ responsibility to further interview all recommended caregivers/teachers and to make the final hiring decision. If a parent seeks our input on making that decision then we may help.

Q: IS YOUR PRESCHOOL PROGRAM AN ACADEMIC-BASED PROGRAM?

A: The combination child care and pre-school program delivered by Kids At Home, is an enjoyable, academic program for three, four and five year old children. This high-quality service endeavours to meet each child’s physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural needs. The curriculum integrates all disciplines, focusing on language development, basic reasoning and communication skills. Letters and number recognition are introduced with teacher-directed activities that provide readiness for reading and math.

Q: WILL OUR CHILD BE CHALLENGED?

A: We believe that children can be at different levels of development and that the curriculum we offer is designed to meet the wide range of abilities for the age group we serve. The program is designed to provide activities and materials to meet the needs of each child, and to challenge the child at whatever level he/she is competent at performing.

Q: WHAT ARE THE TEACHER'S QUALIFICATIONS?

A: Your child's caregiver or teacher will meet all of the qualifications required by your Provincial Government (Talk with the program Director or Co-ordinator for details). As a condition of employment, all of Kids At Home associates complete an extensive orientation program and agree to participate in on-going training and development sessions which include curriculum, child growth and development, and classroom/home management.

Q: WHAT WILL THE CHILDREN DO DURING THE DAY?

A: Your child will participate in a variety of well-planned, developmentally appropriate activities. For example, a typical day will include an art experience, time to work with puzzles or toys that encourage fine motor-skill development, music activities, outdoor games and play, science experiments, and stories. Care-givers/teachers will provide guidance and support during these activities. Our caregivers and teachers also focus on helping the children form friendships and develop a healthy and happy self-image.

Q: WILL OUR CHILD BE USING A COMPUTER?

A: It is possible that your child will have access to a computer during their time in family day care. For in-home care and education, parents might be asked to grant permission to their nanny or governess to use their computer for the purpose of their children developing computer skills. Kids At Home does have software that is appropriate for various ages of children who are ready to learn computers. As a service to parents, Kids At Home may contract with other computer specialists to come into the home to provide computer lessons to your children.

Q: WHAT WILL IT COST- WHAT DOES THE MONTHLY FEE INCLUDE?

A: The monthly fees vary from family to family (depending on the contracted package). Monthly fees usually include meals, snacks, and the materials used by the children during the day. Additional fees might be charged for special programs or field trips away from the home. Fees typically are adjusted on a bi-monthly basis.

Q: CAN WE BRING OUR CHILD'S OWN MEALS AND SNACK?

A: We discourage the children from bringing their own food to the day home since our providers prepare and provide nutritious, well-balanced, meals and snacks. The children are encouraged to try a taste of each food unless they are allergic to the foods. We never force children to eat and we never use food as a reward or punishment. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons (no appetite, illness, etc.) children are not hungry and we respect this. NB: If a parent wishes to provide their own meals and snacks, then parents are asked to discuss this decision with the provider, directly.

Q: HOW DO YOU ADMINISTER MEDICATION, SAFELY?

A: Kids at Home will require authorization from the parents and physician (prescription label serves as this on prescription drugs). A medicine log is kept and only the designated individuals can administer the medication.

Q: ARE SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN TRANSPORTED TO THEIR SCHOOLS?

A: Our out-of-school caregivers will normally provide transportation to nearby schools.

Q: DO YOU OFFER PART-TIME OR OCCASIONAL SERVICE?

We will work with parents/guardians to develop a schedule that will best meet each family's need.
