During
the past decade, we have seen some rapid changes
in media scenario in SVG. Over this period, we
have seen the establishment of three additional
newspapers and five FM radio stations. However we
look at these developments, we must agree that
they have impacted positively on our
communications environment. If nothing else we
have a freer flow of information and more
opportunities for expression within our society. What is
notable about these developments is that they
have been more on the quantitative side. The
additional newspapers and radio stations have not
differed from each other in terms of content and
methods used to present information.
Consequently,
there is a real need for a medium which will take
readers beyond the news given to a more
meaningful treatment of their lived reality. Such
an idea hardly needs justification in a world
saturated with information.
Beyond
News is a news magazine intended to
fill this need for a different treatment of the
information presented by the other media. Its
basic objective is to enable readers to achieve a
deeper understanding of the world as it is
presented by the newspapers, TV, radio, internet
and other media.
Such
an idea is quite novel and ambitious in a place
like St. Vincent and the Grenadines. However, it
is hoped that prospective readers will come to
appreciate the usefulness of the magazine and
accord it a significant place on the media
landscape.
The
magazine started in August 2001 and three issues
were published monthly. Since October 2001,
publication has been suspended for a number of
logistic reasons. However, publication will
recommence at the end of May.
